WHAT IS A COMMANDERIE?

A Commanderie is a district or estate managed by a commander, historically a division of land for Medieval military orders like the Knights Templar or Hospitallers, but also a local chapter of modern fraternal orders. A Commanderie is more than just a local chapter. It's a vibrant organization comprised and sustained by its members. It's a united group of people who make solemn vows to God and to each other and become fellows in Chivalry. Above all things a Commanderie represents charity, compassion, courtesy, honour, justice, loyalty, piety, and prowess. These are the key virtues of Chivalry.

COMMANDERIE LIFE

The extraordinary facet of Commanderie life is the gathering of people from different backgrounds who uphold the same values and principles. To become a Knight of the Order of the Dragon one must be of Christian faith in good standing with the Church and of good character and is known to be. If you lead a secular life and wish to become a Knight of the Order, you would have to be Baptised and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. It's our Christian belief that binds us together as much as our solemn vow to each other.

CHIVALRY

The code of Chivalry is a combination of a warriors ethos, piety, and courtly manners that are the pillars of a moral and social system upheld by Knights since the Middle Ages. There is no single code of Chivalry and historically, an informal and evolving code of conduct. The Order has formalised Chivalry as a standard code of conduct for all it's members. There are eight pillars of Chivalry. Charity, compassion, courtesy, honour, justice, loyalty, piety, and prowess.

CHARITY AND THE ORDER

One of the most important core values and pillars of Chivalry is charity. The definition of a "charitable act" is a generous, selfless action done to help others, especially those in need, without the expectation of anything in return. A Knight of the Order upholds this core value. Knights are trained to practice charity and to care, not only for their own, but for the whole community through Alms (charitable giving)  and volunteer efforts. United in Christ we gather to help improve ourselves and serve in Chivalry the greater good.

WOMEN AND THE ORDER

The original order was co-founded by Barbara of Celje, Queen of Hungary and Croatia and later Holy Roman Empress on December 12th, 1408 and was the only female member. To honour her, we gladly welcome women into the Order. You can join the ranks of Æthelflæd of Mercia, Jehanne Darc, and Matilda of Tuscany.
